Sometimes you want to change the footnote size, direction (e.g. in right to left languages such as Farsi), etc. Follow this technique to reach the settings for footnotes:
Thanks to TechRepublic for its tip about Word 2003!
- Goto "View" tab (menu) and select "Draft" in "Document Views".
- Goto "Reference" tab and select "Show Notes" in "Footnotes".
- A window appears on the bottom of the screen. Select "Footnote Separator" from the drop-down menu on this screen.
- Micro$oft word shows you the line and now you can customize it according to your need.

Thanks a million for the tip! My hair was turning grey trying to figure this out. But now: how do I make the footnotes run right-to-left without having to move every single one? Could you possibly help me out on this one as well?
You may change it by applying right-to-left to footnote's text. If you use a "style" for your footnotes, you may just change your style.
